Guardianship: An Overview and Ethical Considerations for Healthcare Professionals
Applying for a guardianship/Conservatorship (or both) is often a heart wrenching process or both the proposed ward and proposed guardian. This court process requires families to reveal difficult episodes as it relates to the conduct of the proposed ward in front of a judge, often time shaming one another in the process. What are the ethical implications of possible suggesting a family pursue the guardianship/conservatorship process? We will explore core principles and consider them within the guardianship/conservatorship process. We will also review the basics of obtaining guardianship (or conservatorship) in both standard and emergency scenarios and discuss what can be done to avoid this painful process. Current information on the Georgia Advance Directive for Healthcare will also be presented.
