On your next trip to the grocery store, keep in mind that while it is not recommended to take up drinking, if you already do, red wine can possibly have heart healthy benefits. According to the Mayo Clinic, red wine, in moderation, contains antioxidants that may help prevent heart disease by increasing levels of “good” cholesterol and protecting against artery damage.
Many doctors believe that red wine and heart health are related. Those antioxidants, flavoniods or resveratrol and polyphenols, have heart-healthy benefits. Resveratrol is a key ingredient in red wine and helps prevent damage to blood vessels; it also has been shown to reduce “bad” cholesterol, prevent blood clots, and to reduce to the risk of inflammation, all of which can lead to heart disease. Polyphenols may help protect the lining of blood vessels in your heart.
The research states that while red wine seems to have more heart-healthy benefits than other types of alcohol, it is possible that red wine isn’t any better than beer, white wine, or liquor for heart health. However red wine does contain the antioxidants listed above that have been shown to have heart-healthy benefits.
